About Kalya

Kalya is a ceramicist based in Brooklyn, NY. She creates vases and lighting with a focus on textural glazes. After graduating from RISD, Kalya designed for local manufacturers such as Roll & Hill and a number of boutique interior studios, where she developed a deep understanding of how objects interact with everyday spaces. Her work is grounded in items that are simple and functional to an interior while drawing inspiration from the movement of the surf and the textures of the tidepools. Growing up on the industrial waterfront, her work emulates the beauty of the ocean, eating away at and simultaneously growing on industrial infrastructure. She starts with structural forms and then applies textural biomorphic glazes. Kalya engineers her glaze recipes so that she has control over the glaze, but only to an extent. Applying it in various thicknesses and consistencies. Once applied, the glaze dries, shrinks, and melts in the kiln, forming its own intricate patterns of texture.
